Health Minister Anil Vij said on Wednesday that the Centre had decided to develop a civil airport in Ambala Cantonment and a team of the Airports Authority of India had identified land for the purpose.

Speaking to mediapersons, the minister said, “Under the UDAN scheme, a civil airport will be developed in Ambala Cantonment by the Centre and a team of the Airport Authority of India has carried out a survey of the land for the purpose. The team has identified land at Barnala village adjoining an Air Force station.”

“Some more information has been sought by the Airports Authority of India and if everything goes right, a domestic airport will be established in Ambala Cantonment soon, which has been a long pending demand. Ambala is a junction and a large number of people reach here daily for business purposes. It will be a successful airport,” he said.

As per the information, a five-member team had carried out the survey on Saturday and had visited areas of Mandli, Dhankour and Barnala villages. However, the team was not allowed to carry out the survey inside the Air Force station.

The minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Civil Aviation Minister for the project. He said, “We are hopeful that all formalities will be completed soon and the work to develop the airport will begin at the earliest.” —TNS
