Australian scientists, farmers visit HAU

A 13-member team comprising Australian scientists and farmers visited Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) here on Thursday. 

The team, led by Dr David Coventry, a retired professor from Adelaide University, Australia, visited the university’s research firm and reviewed the ongoing work. The members also called on Vice-Chancellor KP Singh and discussed the common issues of agriculture in Australia and India. 

They discussed steps to reduce the gap between yield potential and average yield of different crops, getting high yield with less water and to reduce the impact of pollution on crops. Expressing concern over the falling water table, the scientists emphasised the need for a special focus on water management in crop production.

Dr David Coventry was associated with the HAU from 2002 to 2012 in the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIRR) project. This team has come to India to know its impact on the recent scenario in agriculture.

It will also visit the villages of Mahendragarh, Sirsa, Kaithal and Karnal districts, where the ACIAR project was undertaken.
