The district unit of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Tikait) has resolved to oppose BJP candidates in the Assembly election on October 5.

At a meeting held here today, the union resolved to lend its support to any non-BJP candidate who could ensure the defeat of the ruling party candidates from all segments in the district.

The meeting presided over by Ratan Singh Sorot, national secretary of the union, resolved that the members owing allegiance to BKU (Tikait) would oppose the BJP as the party had made the farmers suffer during its 10-year rule at the Centre and state. The meeting held under the chairmanship of Pandit Daniram decided that the union would work to ensure the ouster of BJP in the state.

Sorot said while the union would not support any particular party, it would extend support to strong candidates from various segments who may be from any other party except the BJP in these elections. He said the harassment of women wrestlers has been unprecedented.

The demands of farmers regarding MSP and the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission also remain unmet.
