BJP, Congress trade charges over women reservation Bill in Karnal
The BJP and Congress on Monday traded barbs over the women’s reservation Bill, with both the parties holding press conferences to attack each other.
BJP leader and Karnal Mayor Renu Bala Gupta accused the Congress and other Opposition parties of exposing their “anti-women mindset by opposing amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam”. On the other hand, Congress urban district president Parag Gaba criticised the Union government’s approach to the Bill. Rejecting the BJP’s charge that Congress opposed the Bill, he clarified that their objection was only to the delimitation clause.
“By creating disruption in Parliament, the Congress and other opposition parties have disrespected women. It was a historic opportunity for the empowerment of women and politics should not be played over the issue,” said Karnal Mayor Gupta.
Accompanied by BJP district president Parveen Lather, other leaders and councillors, Gupta accused the Opposition of insulting half of the country’s population by opposing the Bill. She said women across the country were aware who was working for their empowerment and would respond democratically in future.
Lathar warned that the Opposition parties would face consequences of opposing the Bill. “The Opposition has deprived women of their rightful share. The women of the country will now stand united against the Congress and its anti-women alliance,” he said.
Meanwhile, Congress district urban president Parag Gaba said, “The party has always prioritised women’s rights. We are not against reservation, but it should be based on the Census data. In 2023, we supported the Bill and we will support it again if it is implemented across all 543 Lok Sabha seats.”
Congress leader Monica Dumra said the party had respected women during its tenure. “The BJP is spreading lies and confusion. The Congress has never opposed women’s reservation. We opposed the government’s attempt to bind women’s rights in procedures and conditions, which is unjust,” she said.
