The use of cash, liquor, drugs and related items to influence voters during the Assembly poll has perhaps not been curbed completely despite the claims of strict vigil and checking since the announcement of election on September 21.

The police have recovered cash and other items worth over Rs 3.5 crore in Palwal and Faridabad districts in the past month.

While the police have seized as many as 87,075 bottles of liquor in Palwal district, they have also seized around 424 gm of smack and 523.85 kg of cannabis from drug traffickers or peddlers in the past 30 days.

The seizure also includes 14 illegal weapons and cash amounting to Rs 8,77,000. Admitting that the total cost of the seizure comes to around Rs 3.03 crore in Palwal district in this period, a spokesperson of the police department said that a probe was on to find the source and destination of the cash, liquor and drugs recovered during the drive connected with the election campaign.

Claiming that while a large number of ‘nakas’ had been made operational in the district to check the movement of such items, he said a total of 2,500 police personnel had been deployed in connection with maintaining law and order on polling day (Monday). Adequate police personnel have been posted at the 689 booths set up for polling in the district.

In Faridabad district, the police department revealed that the cost of the seizure of cash, liquor and drugs was around Rs 52 lakh since September 21. As many as 300 proclaimed offenders have also been nabbed.

A spokesperson of the department claimed that 6,000 police personnel, including several companies of paramilitary and Punjab Police, have been deployed for security and maintaining of law and order during polling.
