Kanishk Chauhan’s standout performance in the U-19 World Cup final helped India lift the title for a record sixth time, sparking celebrations across the district on Saturday.
Scenes of jubilation were witnessed at Shah Satnam Ji College, where Chauhan is a student, as sweets were distributed and students danced to celebrate the achievement. Residents across the city also marked the occasion by sharing sweets.
In the U-19 ICC World Cup final against England on Friday, Chauhan delivered a strong all-round performance, scoring an unbeaten 37 off 20 balls and claiming two crucial wickets in his 8.2 overs.
Sirsa Cricket Association secretary Dr Ved Bainiwal said Chauhan impressed in all three departments — batting, bowling and fielding. He described him as a hardworking player who made the most of every opportunity and said he was confident Chauhan could go on to feature on bigger stages, including the Indian Premier League.
Shah Satnam Ji Boys College principal Dr Dilawar Singh said India’s U-19 World Cup triumph was a proud moment for Sirsa, Haryana and the country. He noted final-year student Chauhan had made an important contribution to the team’s success.
Local cricketers also welcomed the achievement, calling it a source of inspiration for young players in the district. Players including Ajay, Sumit and Harpreet said Chauhan’s journey showed that cricketers from small towns could represent India through dedication and hard work.
Chauhan is originally from Jhajjar district but moved to Sirsa with his family in 2014 to pursue cricket. He trained at the Shah Satnam Ji Cricket Academy, where he began shaping his career.
