Members of the District Congress Committee and Women and Scheduled Castes (SC) cells burnt the Union Minister effigy at Ambedkar Chowk in the city. A signature campaign seeking Puri’s resignation was also launched. “There is a nationwide outcry against the Union Minister. He should step down immediately as his name has surfaced in such a serious matter. If the government believes in transparency and accountability, this matter should be investigated impartially,” said Satyavir Yadav Jhookia of the District Congress Committee.

Former Chief Parliamentary Secretary Anita Yadav said there should be no compromise on issues pertaining to safety and modesty of women. “If people at higher posts are found involved in such cases, their resignation is the right way to maintain democratic values,” she said. District Women Congress chief Dr Rajwati Yadav said, “The Centre has maintained silence on the matter, which is extremely worrying.”

Congress SC cell district head Totaram Kohli said the people would not remain silent on such matters. “If Puri does not resign from his post, the Congress will intensify the movement across the country,” said Kohli.
