Following the call of the All India Congress Committee, members of the district Congress committee, under the aegis of MGNREGA Bachao Sangram, held a protest at the mini secretariat here on Thursday. Scores of farmers, workers and party office-bearers participated.
Ramesh Malik, president (rural), said any tampering with the original form of MGNREGA would not be accepted. Leading the protest, he said MGNREGA was not just a scheme but a legal right of the rural poor and labourers.
After the protest, a memorandum was submitted to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner. They demanded the restoration of MGNREGA in its original rights-based form.
The protesters said if the Central government remained adamant, the movement would be intensified.
In Sonepat, too, Congress workers protested at the mini secretariat and raised slogans against the Central government, accusing the BJP-led Central and state governments of adopting anti-poor policies.
The protesting members submitted a memorandum to the President through the district administration and demanded the scrapping of the ‘G-RAM-G’ scheme.
