Cricket craze strengthens community bond in Sirsa, Fatehabad villages
NRIs contribute financially, help organise tournaments, ensuring local talent gets opportunities to shine at all levels
Cricket is more than just a sport in India, it is a passion that runs in the hearts of millions. In Sirsa and Fatehabad, this passion comes alive at village-level cricket tournaments that are now turning local grounds into buzzing sporting hubs. Every year, the villages organise tournaments that draw not only local teams but also participants from neighbouring states like Punjab, Rajasthan, Chandigarh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. These events are more than just matches they are festivals of sport, community, and camaraderie.
What makes these tournaments special is the level of support from local communities. Panchayats, businesspeople, politicians and social leaders pitch in to ensure smooth organisation of the event. The players are provided with food, lodging and practice facilities. Organisers also stream matches live on social media, allowing cricket fans far and wide to witness the action. This digital reach has turned these local events into spectacles that attract large online audiences.
One of the most prestigious tournaments in the region is the Badopal Cricket Tournament in Fatehabad. Organized for nearly two decades, it has become a legacy event, held annually at the Jagdish Keru Cricket Stadium. This year, the Shah Satnam Cricket Academy from Sirsa emerged victorious, winning Rs 1.70 lakh in prize money. Gurdit Sports Club finished as runners-up, taking home Rs 1.21 lakh. Individual honours, including Rs 21,000 for man of the series, as well as awards for best batsman and best bowler, recognised outstanding performances. The organisers emphasised that the tournament is not only about promoting cricket but also about fostering unity and teamwork in the community. Over 11 days, the local youth volunteer to manage the event, ensuring visiting teams and guests feel welcomed. BJP leader and former MLA Dura Ram joined the prize distribution, highlighting the tournament’s importance to the region.
At Chakkan in Sirsa, another exciting five-day tournament concluded recently, featuring 52 teams from Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan. The final match between Chakkan and Pilibanga was a thrilling five-over contest. Pilibanga set a target of 54 runs, but Chakkan chased it successfully, winning by nine wickets. The winners received cash awards.
Special awards for best batsman, best bowler, and best series were also presented, motivating the players to excel. Sarpanch Amar Singh Chhapola and other local leaders presided over the event, demonstrating deep connection between cricket and community leadership.
Other villages, including Kusumbi, Bani, Panniwala Mota, Dhingtania, Nehrana, and Ratta Khera, have also embraced cricket tournaments as a way to encourage young people to stay active and away from negative influences. Local residents work together to ensure these events are successful, highlighting a spirit of collaboration and brotherhood.
A unique aspect of these tournaments is the support from non-resident indians (NRIs) who maintain strong ties with their villages. Many NRIs contribute financially and help organise the tournaments, ensuring local talent gets opportunities to shine. For instance, the Sidhu brothers from Australia, sponsor an annual January tournament in their Jalalana village in Sirsa. They generously reward top performers with gifts like tractors and bikes, adding excitement and prestige to the event.
Raj Kasnia, a cricket enthusiast and tournament organiser from Nathusari Chopta village, said in Sirsa and Fatehabad, cricket was more than just a game, it was a celebration that brought the communities together. These tournaments foster friendships, motivate young players and create memories that stay with them for a lifetime.
Parveen Dudi, another cricket lover, said with strong local support, live social media coverage and contributions from the global diaspora, the village cricket in these regions had become a model for promoting sports, teamwork, and community spirit at the grassroots level.
