A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) has been booked for misusing his authority to help a woman fraudster in getting bail.

The police have booked Samalkha DSP Naresh Ahlawat and the woman, Poonam Puri, a resident of Sat Kartar Colony, under relevant sections of the IPC on the basis of an inquiry report.

According to information, a case was registered on the complaint of Sanjay Kaushik, Senior Regional Manager, HPCL, against Poonam Puri (clerk in finance department of HPCL), her brother Rajiv Puri, Praveen Pushkar (Manager, Finance, HPCL) and Nitin Sharma, proprietor of Krishna Gas Agency, on July 28, 2010, for allegedly embezzling Rs 7.16 crore from the HPCL.

RP Sharma, father of Nitin Sharma, stated that Nitin, Praveen and Rajiv got regular bail, but Poonam was not arrested. She was declared a proclaimed offender on October 10, 2016, and her anticipatory bail applications were also rejected by the High Court and Supreme Court, he said. On March 17 this year, Poonam surrendered in a local court. The DSP, who was investigating the case, reached the court and on the directions of the court, Poonam joined investigation in the presence of her husband, he said.

Surprisingly, the DSP submitted his report in the court after some hours and on the basis of the report, the court gave bail to Poonam the same day, he said, and added that the police did not seek any police or judicial remand of Poonam.

Nitin, a resident of Model Town, gave a complaint against the DSP and Poonam to Navdeep Singh Virk, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Karnal Range. Following the complaint, the ADGP directed Panipat SP Manbeer Singh to conduct an inquiry into the matter.

The ADGP said the SP conducted the inquiry and found shortcomings in the matter. A case has been registered against the DSP and Poonam on the basis of the inquiry report and further investigations are on.
