To improve the Faridabad’s ranking in this year’s Swachh Survekshan, the Municipal Corporation has decided to get tough with people for violating cleanliness norms.

The city was ranked 217th among 4,041 cities covered in the survey last year. In 2017, the city’s rank was 88 and in the previous year, it was 58. The city had got an open defecation-free tag in 2017. But the city lost it the next year.

To better its record, the MC would issue challans for violations such as dumping of solid waste, encroachments upon public places and open defecation, a spokesperson for the MC said.

The fine will range from Rs200 for dumping domestic garbage or waste in the open to Rs5,000 for burning waste in the open. Any activity resulting in damaging the ecology of a park will attract a fine of Rs1,500. “If offenders fail to pay, a criminal complaint will be lodged against them,” the spokesperson said.

Dhirender Khadgata, Additional Commissioner, MC, said the violation of cleanliness norms would be dealt with sternly. “This measure (imposing of fine) is not only aimed at ensuring cleanliness at public places, but also at changing the mindset of those residents who have a tendency to ignore cleanliness norms,” he said.

The team of Swachh Survekshan officials was expected to complete the survey in the next three to four days, he said.

Meanwhile, the newly elected Hisar Municipal Corporation on Monday decided to impose a fine of Rs500 for dumping garbage in the open. The decision was taken in the first meeting of the new House under the chairpersonship of Mayor Gautam Sardana.

The newly elected body also decided to start a help desk in the MC office for residents coming with their grievances.

“Nobody should face unnecessary harassment at the MC office. The help desk will function as a key point, which will not only guide visitors with specific directions to get their works done, but also redress their grievances,” said Sardana.

Some councillors flagged the lack of space for parking in markets. So, the MC mulled constructing a multi-level parking area. The project would be taken up with the higher authorities soon, the MC decided.

Penalty amount
