Yamunanagar, December 10

Women are not behind men in contesting the Municipal Corporation elections here. In all, 63 women and as many men are in fray in 22 wards of the Yamunanagar-Jagadhri MC.

“It’s a result of awareness among women. The equal participation of women will help in strengthening the democratic system in the country,” said Nirmal Chauhan, a sitting councillor who is contesting from ward 13.

As for the Mayor’s post, the scales are tilted in favour of men as only one woman is in fray among 12 candidates.

Only two mayoral candidates — Madan Chauhan of the BJP and Sandeep Kumar Goyal (INLD-BSP alliance candidate) — are contesting on the party symbol. The rest are Independent candidates.
