Interestingly, the residence was vacated three days after MDU Registrar Dr Krishan Kant wrote to Prof Singh, asking him to vacate the house.

“You completed your term as Vice-Chancellor on February 20, but the VC residence is still under your possession. Kindly vacate the house at the earliest and hand over all inventories of store items provided at the VC’s residence to the concerned university official,” stated a communiqué sent to Prof Singh by the Registrar on March 9.

The Registrar also directed the concerned official to take charge of all inventory items at the residence, ensuring that the stock matched the entries in the stock register and that the process was completed at the earliest.

Sources said that before vacating the residence, articles belonging to Prof Singh were shifted from the university premises using vehicles.

Notably, a group of students had submitted a written complaint to the university authorities on Wednesday, demanding that the shifting process be conducted transparently and strictly in accordance with institutional procedures.

“We had urged the university administration to ensure that no university property is removed during the process and sought proper verification of items being taken out from the residence,” said a student.

Significantly, the university authorities had constituted a five-member committee to facilitate the shifting of Prof Singh’s personal belongings from the official residence.

The committee comprised Dr Sanjeev Kumar, in-charge (faculty house); Kanta Rani, Assistant Registrar (General Administration); Rameshwar Kumar, Superintendent (General Administration); Jagdish Kumar, caretaker; and Parshu Ram Kafle, clerk. The committee was tasked with ensuring a smooth transfer of the belongings and submitting a report to the university authorities.

The final days of Prof Singh’s tenure were marked by controversy. On February 18, he convened a meeting of the Executive Council despite directions from the Department of Higher Education against holding the meeting. A day earlier, on February 17 evening, he had suspended Registrar Dr Krishan Kant.

The situation prompted intervention from Governor-cum- Chancellor’s office, which ordered the reinstatement of the Registrar and directed that the Executive Council meeting be postponed until further notice.

Meanwhile, Prof Som Nath Sachdeva, officiating Vice-Chancellor, confirmed that Prof Singh vacated the official residence on Thursday.
