Faridabad MC Commissioner transferred in 11 months

Faridabad continues to be a victim of frequent transfers of its Municipal Corporation Commissioners.

Mohammed Shayin, the 15th official to hold the post in the past five years, was issued transfer orders on Thursday. Shayin served here for less than 11 months and hence, the average tenure of the officials — since 2013 — comes to only four months.

Raising a finger of suspicion, Varun Sheokand, a social activist based here, said, “This shows the seriousness of the higher authorities in taking the city on the ‘Smart’ path. Faridabad is among the two cities of Haryana undergoing the Smart city project costing Rs 2,601 crore.

“The outgoing official had come to be known as a daring one who took on the land mafia and the corrupt nexus that were affecting the MCF for the past several decades,” said Varun.

He alleged that impending action against the 140 illegal farmhouses and an under-construction five-star hotel in the Aravalli belt of Surajkund had perhaps led to the formation of political pressure to oust him.

“This seems to be a direct fallout of the strict action taken against tax defaulters, illegal constructions and failure to entertain political interference,” said an official on the condition of anonymity.

He alleged that the special audit of 500 files of the planning and engineering branch had unearthed a revenue loss of Rs 352 crore. It had perhaps created fear among the mafia that had been ruling the roost in the official corridors of the MCF.

The recovery of taxes in the past seven months was more than the collection in the entire year of 2017-18, it is claimed.

“Shayin fell victim to a corrupt political system that doesn’t tolerate the officials who fail to toe its line,” remarked Abhash Chandela, a local resident.
