A delegation of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) met Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini at his official residence here this evening.
They submitted a memorandum highlighting the issues faced by the state’s peasantry community.
The farmers urged the government to take immediate action on their 10-point charter of demands, stressing that timely intervention is necessary to safeguard both agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods.
Observing the India-US trade deal as a direct attack on farmers and agricultural labourers, they demanded that it should be scrapped outrightly.
They claimed that the statements from the US authorities suggested that India may allow American agricultural products to enter the domestic market at zero customs duty, which, according to them, would severely impact Indian farmers’ livelihoods.
The farmers also demanded the implementation of a legal guarantee for minimum support price (MSP) on all crops, claiming that growers suffer massive financial losses annually due to procurement below MSP rates. They also called for complete loan waivers for farmers.
