The Rashtriya Kisan Mahasangh, an umbrella body of 110 farmers’ organisations, on Friday announced that it would launch a nationwide march in support of farm reforms.

Gurnam Singh Charuni, core committee member of the mahasangh, said the march would begin from Handwara in Jammu and Kashmir on July 26 and culminate in Kanyakumari on August 19.

He said the programme was planned to highlight core issues of the farming community, including loan waiver and implementation of Swaminathan Commission report.

Farmers’ leaders would also hold meetings with farmers as the march would pass through various parts of the country, he added.

Charuni, also president of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Haryana), said the association would boycott Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s public meeting in Shahabad on Sunday.

He said sugarcane growers had been waiting endlessly for clearance of their payments to the tune of Rs 800 crore. He pointed out that the state government had failed to resolve pending dues.
