Fashion studio opens at Central Jail Ambala

The Haryana Prisons Department, in collaboration with social organisation Charity on Wheels, has started ‘The Fashion Studio’ in Central Jail Ambala in order to make women inmates self-reliant. The fashion studio became operational on Sunday.

DGP Jail K Selvaraj, who inaugurated the studio, said, “The studio is an attempt to enable the women inmates to earn their livelihood and join the mainstream after their release from the prison. The jail department has started a special programme to make women prisoners skilled in subjects like dressmaking, fashion designing, tailoring and cutting. The programme has been launched from Ambala, and soon it will be replicated in four more jails (Kurukshetra, Karnal, Panipat and Sonepat) too.”

Besides teaching the women inmates, the marketing of the dresses prepared will also be done by the social organisaiton. The inmates will be given basic training for three months in the first phase and then they will be trained for preparing dresses. The dresses will be made available in the market too.

Vinki Singh, chairperson of the social organisation, said similar programmes had been launched in Mandoli and Tihar jails too. Such programmes don’t only provide an opportunity to improve the skills of the inmates, but also shift their focus from negativity to positivity.

Later the DGP inspected the jail factory, kitchen, and hospital. He also saw the products being prepared by the prisoners in the bakery and tasted the items prepared there. He appreciated the products and also inquired about the problems being faced by the prisoners.

Jail Superintendent Lakhbir Brar apprised the DGP of prison-related activities.
