Fatehabad deaths: ‘Drug addiction’ led to quarrels, woman’s husband arrested

The deaths of an anganwadi worker and her two children in Mehuwala village, initially being treated as a drowning case, took a new turn on Saturday with Bhattu Kalan police arresting the woman’s husband on charges of abetment to suicide.

The incident took place on Thursday when Sudesh, an Anganwadi worker, and her two children, daughter Jyoti and son Vineet, were found dead in a nearly 10-ft-deep water tank at their house.

According to police sources, Sandeep, alias Kala, is allegedly addicted to drugs, which reportedly led to disputes in the family. Sudesh used to object to his drug use, resulting in arguments.

The police registered a case against Sandeep after Sudesh’s brother Parveen alleged that his sister had been subjected to harassment by her husband.

According to SHO Veer Singh, the police had received information from CHC Bhattu Kalan about the deaths and initially investigated the incident as a drowning case.

The police also came across a video allegedly recorded by Sudesh before the incident. “In the video, she is seen giving allegedly a drink mixed with poison to her children before entering the water tank herself,” the police said.

“Sandeep has been arrested and is being questioned. Police are investigating the family disputes, allegations of harassment and other circumstances leading to the deaths. Further action will depend on the findings of the probe,” the SHO said.
