The Gurugram traffic police have said that they would issue challans if motorists do not give way to emergency vehicles like ambulances and the fire brigade. The erring commuters would have to pay a fine of Rs 10,000.
DCP (Traffic) Virender Vij said the zonal officer of the traffic police would sit in such vehicles and also record videos of commuters not giving way to emergency vehicles.
Online challans would be sent to such offenders without any delay. Recording of such incidents will also be sent as proof to the offenders along with challans.
The DCP said, “The fine for the offence is Rs 10,000 under Section 194E of the Motor Vehicle Act. The drive will also help in saving lives of patients in critical condition.”
“The Gurugram traffic police was already providing green corridors for ambulances carrying organs for transplant to different hospitals and helping save lives of serious patients. Last year, they had provided 15 green corridors to serious patients and ambulances carrying organs for transplant,” he added.
As per Section 194E of the Motor Vehicle Act, “Whoever while driving a motor vehicle fails to draw to the side of the road, on the approach of a fire service vehicle or of an ambulance or other emergency vehicle as may be specified by the state government, shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months, or with a fine of Rs 10,000 or with both.”
