Residents in the area heard a loud explosion and saw flames rising from the shops. They alerted the Fire Brigade.
Fire tenders rushed to the spot and managed to bring the blaze under control. School bags, plastic tiffins and other household items in the shops were gutted. Two LPG cylinders were safely removed from a shop. It could have been a major tragedy had the cylinders exploded, said a shopkeeper. Rajender Kumar, a resident, said he rushed out of his house on hearing a loud sound of blast and saw flames emerging from a shop. Another shopkeeper said the flames also reached the upper floor of a building where a family resided, but the occupants escaped safely.
