In a move aimed at boosting Haryana’s agri-economy, Gurugram will be developed as an exotic flower, vegetable and fruit hub on the lines of Amsterdam, Agriculture Minister Shyam Singh Rana announced after his recent visit to the Netherlands and Paris.

Once operational, the hub is expected to handle trade worth Rs 350 crore annually, grabbing a significant share from the current Rs 700 crore flower business at Delhi’s Ghazipur mandi.

“Gurugram is the biggest market for exotic food and flowers. We currently have many private players cultivating and selling these, but it is an unorganised market. The state government realises the cosmopolitan potential of the city and we will be harnessing it. We had planned a wholesale flower mandi in the city, but now it will be North India’s biggest hub for these products,” Rana told ‘The Tribune’.

The minister said the Agriculture Department was preparing a project plan and would offer subsidies to farmers, with a special focus on women. “Abroad the market is dominated by women farmers. Here, like mushroom farming, we want to get women farmers on board for this niche farming. Gurugram will soon be a market like Amsterdam,” he added.

The state government has already approved a 10-acre wholesale flower market in Sector 109, Pawala Khusrupur, announced by CM Nayab Saini in the 2025 budget. The Rs 50-crore project, to be executed jointly by the HSAMB and GMDA, will feature modern facilities such as an auction centre, grading and sorting units, cold storage, research and training centres and designated retail spaces.
