Haryana Assembly budget gives new hope for greenfield airport in Karnal

Haryana Chief Minister and Finance Minister Nayab Singh Saini has presented the state budget for 2026-27, unveiling several major initiatives aimed at boosting infrastructure, connectivity and development in Karnal district.
A new greenfield airport is planned on 600 acres in Karnal, with all formal approvals expected to be secured within the 2026-27 fiscal year. This project is expected to accelerate economic, industrial and trade growth, opening new avenues for investment, employment and connectivity. Expressing gratitude to the Chief Minister, Karnal MLA Jagmohan Anand called it a ‘visionary initiative’ for the overall development of Karnal.
Mayor Renu Bala Gupta also welcomed this announcement and said that it would open new paths of development of the district.
Earlier, in November, Union Minister of Power and Karnal MP Manohar Lal Khattar had held a crucial meeting with Union Minister of Civil Aviation Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu in New Delhi.
The long-pending demand for expanding air services in Karnal, currently home to one of the oldest aviation clubs in the region, now appears to be gaining direction. Presently, Karnal has a Civil Aviation Club, spread to around 171 acres from 107 earlier, and the runway is to be extended from the current 3,000 feet to 5,000 feet, enabling the landing of small to medium-sized aircraft.
The budget also includes provisions for upgrading road infrastructure, strengthening energy initiatives and enhancing public transportation. The CM also highlighted the step of the Union government for regional connectivity, the 136-km Delhi-Karnal Rapid Rail Transit System corridor, which has been approved at an estimated cost of Rs 33,051 crore, while the 93-Km Delhi-Bawal corridor will cost Rs 32,327 crore. These corridors are part of the Namo Bharat RRTS project, which aims to provide fast and reliable transit between key districts.
Besides, the CM also announced a fish processing unit with an estimated cost of Rs 50 crore in the district.
