The Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee has cancelled its meeting scheduled for March 31, in which the budget for 2026-27 was to be passed. The decision has come after the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Judicial Commission recently nullified the General House meeting held on January 7, in which the budget was claimed to have been passed.
As per HSGMC leaders, uncertainty prevailed in the committee and no next date for the budget meeting has been announced.
Amid growing differences among committee members, the completion of the quorum to convene the meeting has been a challenge for HSGMC president Jagdish Singh Jhinda. In the House of 49 members, the committee president requires the support of a two-thirds majority (33 members) to complete the quorum in the General House, and in the executive body of 11 members, there is a requirement of eight members to complete the quorum.
Jhinda said, “The decision regarding the budget meeting was taken in the executive body meeting attended by seven members, but in the recent orders, the commission has stated that there should be eight members in executive body meetings to complete the quorum. The previous budget meeting was challenged by some members over the issue of quorum. A fresh date will be announced later.”
“There are different factions in the HSGMC, and no faction has the majority. In such a situation, we need the support from all members to ensure smooth operations of the committee, but some members have been creating obstacles,” he added.
To a query, he said, “Soon, we will hold a meeting of our members to discuss the future course of action and also get a legal opinion on the current situation. We will again request the Haryana Chief Minister to amend the gurdwara Act to do away with the requirement of a two-thirds majority and replace it with a simple majority.”
Akal Panthak Morcha leader and HSGMC member Harmanpreet Singh said, “Members should understand that they have been sending the wrong message to the Sikh community of Haryana due to their personal issues. They should resolve the issues and ensure a smooth management.”
Senior vice-president Gurmeet Singh said, “The president hasn’t been able to gain the support of committee members due to which the meetings are repeatedly cancelled. He should resign on moral grounds and let the other members run the committee.”
