Haryana Police removes over 16,000 illegal online links, fake sites in 7 months to curb cyber fraud
DGP Haryana Ajay Singhal said that in today’s digital era, the nature of crime is changing rapidly, with criminals increasingly misusing technology to target ordinary citizens
The Haryana Police’s dedicated social media monitoring and URL blocking teams are continuously identifying phishing links, fake websites, fraudulent applications, misleading advertisements, fake profiles and other illegal online content.
From January to July 2026, a total of 16,308 illegal online content/items have been removed.
DGP Haryana Ajay Singhal said that in today’s digital era, the nature of crime is changing rapidly, with criminals increasingly misusing technology to target ordinary citizens. He said that the Haryana Police’s priority is to use technology to stay one step ahead of criminals. Through social media monitoring, URL blocking and online content takedown mechanisms, effective control is being exercised over cybercrime, misinformation and illegal digital activities.
He said that immediate action is ensured against objectionable content related to women and children as well as online material linked to cyber fraud, with the objective of maintaining a safe and trustworthy digital environment for citizens.
The Haryana Police’s digital monitoring is not limited to cyber fraud alone. Special attention is also being given to misleading information circulated on social media, content aimed at creating confusion among the public, disturbing social harmony or promoting criminal activities. After verification of suspicious and misleading comments and content posted by anti-social elements, action is taken through the prescribed process to remove or restrict access to the concerned URLs, social media accounts, applications and advertisements.
As part of this initiative, the Online Crimes against Women and Children unit is carrying out specialised monitoring of harmful, objectionable and illegal online content related to women and children. As soon as such content is identified, it is reported to the concerned platform and prompt takedown action is ensured.
The objective of this mechanism is to provide women and children with a safer online environment free from online harassment, exploitation and objectionable digital material.
During this period, the cyber team is identifying posts, videos, links and profiles on a daily basis containing misinformation, provocative language or content that may disturb public peace. As soon as any such material comes to notice, a notice is issued to the concerned social media platform under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, seeking its immediate removal.
SP Mayank Gupta said that the main objective of this campaign is to provide society with a safe, aware and trustworthy digital environment, so that social media can be used in the right direction. He said that social media is a powerful platform which, when used responsibly, can play a major role in connecting society, disseminating information and bringing about positive change.
In view of the increasing incidents involving fake investment and trading apps, Haryana DGP Ajay Singhal has appealed to citizens to remain vigilant. He said that cybercriminals lure people with promises of high returns in a short period and trap them in fraudulent schemes, causing many victims to lose their life savings. The DGP urged citizens not to make financial transactions through any suspicious app, link or website and to thoroughly verify its credibility before making any investment.
