Haryana State Women Commission chairperson Renu Bala Bhatia has taken a firm stand against the use of abusive and derogatory remarks against women in songs, reels and social media content.

“Comparing women with alcohol or weapons, or using offensive language in lyrics is condemnable and reflects a regressive mindset. We have a strong stand against abusive language in songs,” said Bhatia while interacting with media persons at PWD Rest House in Kaithal.

She was here to highlight the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam 2023. She claimed it was a commendable decision by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the direction of women’s empowerment. She said it would broaden women’s participation from Panchayats to Parliament, ushering in a new era of empowerment.

Responding to a question, Bhatia termed the “abuse and apology” culture as a reflection of poor mentality, stressing that a mere apology should no longer be acceptable. “Society must stand united against such objectionable content,” she asserted.

Bhatia revealed that she had written to Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini recommending a special monitoring mechanism for social media, reels, and songs. She suggested introducing a censorship system for digital content similar to films, and appointing a state-level committee or officer to ensure immediate action against offensive material. She also urged artists in the music industry to respect women in their creations, warning that the commission would take strict action against any objectionable content.
