As the festival of Holi approaches, the Haryana Health Department has issued an advisory to ensure the safety and well-being of the public during the celebrations. The advisory emphasises the importance of hydration, encouraging people to drink plenty of fluids to stay healthy while asking people to apply tilak instead of using excessive colours.

The Health Department recommended the use of organic colours and flowers instead of synthetic colours to avoid the risk of skin and eye irritation. People are advised to protect their eyes, skin and respiratory system by wearing sunglasses, applying sunscreen, and using masks when necessary, the advisory stated. In case of any medical emergency, individuals are urged to consult a qualified medical practitioner or visit the nearest government health facility, with the helpline number 112 available for immediate assistance, it stated.

The Haryana Health Department has directed all civil surgeons across the state to ensure the effective dissemination of these guidelines. The authorities have been instructed to take necessary measures to create awareness and encourage safe celebrations.

The advisory warns against drinking and driving, indulging in drugs, gambling, or harming animals during the festivities. Throwing water balloons forcefully at people and playing loud music have also been discouraged to prevent accidents and maintain public harmony. The use of synthetic colours, mud, or cow dung is advised against due to their harmful effects on the skin and overall health, the advisory stated.

To protect the skin, the Health Department has recommended applying a barrier of oil or sunscreen before playing Holi and covering up as much as possible to avoid direct exposure. Makeup should be avoided and after the celebration, colours should be gently removed using a mild cleanser followed by the application of a soothing lotion to prevent irritation. For eye safety, the use of protective gear such as sunglasses is suggested to prevent direct contact with colours. People wearing contact lenses are advised to remove them before playing Holi, as they can cause severe discomfort if exposed to colours. Regarding respiratory safety, the advisory recommends playing Holi in well-ventilated spaces and avoiding dusty areas to reduce the risk of breathing difficulties.
