A 26-year-old man, who was arrested over a stabbing incident on July 6, was found dead in the custody of the CIA branch of the police on Monday. While the police claimed that the accused, who was arrested on the charge of attempted murder, died by suicide inside the police station, the authorities ordered a magisterial probe into the matter.

A spokesperson for the Police Department said the accused, identified as Amit from Ghazipur village, had approached the police station to file a complaint with his medico-legal report (MLR). However, he was booked under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) as he had also stabbed another youth who was in serious condition.

Both youths had gone to a shopping mall on the night of July 5 and had stabbed each other after a quarrel over some issue inside the mall. A police official said after Amit was arrested and placed in a cell at the CIA police station for interrogation. He was found hanging around 6 am. The matter has also been placed before the state and National Human Rights Commission.
