Hisar, June 16

Continuing their 35-day-long dharna over crop loss relief, agitated farmers today barged into the office of the Tehsildar and courted arrest at Balsamand police station of the district today.

The farmers reached the police station at Balsamand village in the morning as they had announced to court arrest today. When the police did not arrest them, they started a dharna at the Tehsildar’s office at the sub-tehsil office at Balsamand.

Another group of protesting farmers went to the Tehsil office in Adampur town of the district demanding their arrest. But when the police did not take any action, they barged into the office of the Tehsildar in Adampur and stayed inside the office till evening. The Tehsildar was inside his room during the incident. After about two hours, DSP Kaptan Singh and SHO Jaswant Singh persuaded the farmers to come out of the office. The police were deployed to deal with any untoward incident.

The farmers said that compensation of about Rs 190 crore of 19 villages has been approved but hasn’t been disbursed by the government for crop loss during kharif season 2020.

They also alleged that they were denied compensation in 2021 kharif season even when the kharif crops including cotton, ‘moong’ etc had suffered losses due to inundation and pink bollworm.

Farmer leader Surender Arya said that the government officials concerned had prepared a wrong report which showed the crop losses to be less than 25 per cent which resulted in denial of compensation to all the farmers in these 19 villages. They said that their dharna would continue until the government accepts their demands.
