Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda today lambasted the Haryana Public Service Commission's (HPSC) 35 per cent cut-off policy for employment. Hooda said the BJP government’s arbitrary minimum marks requirement was a conspiracy to rob Haryana’s youth of its rights. He blamed the policy for destroying the reservation system of the state.

“Haryana's youth are already suffering from unemployment and this arbitrary 35 per cent cut-off policy of the HPSC is failing eligible candidates and leaving positions vacant. Thousands of positions like assistant professor and lecturer are lying vacant, even though eligible candidates are available,” said Hooda, accusing the government of deliberately keeping posts unfilled.

A delegation of HPSC candidates, who were staging a protest in Panchkula, submitted a memorandum to Hooda on Wednesday. They said reserved categories such as BC-A, BC-B, SC, DSC and EWS were the most affected since the number of candidates that cleared the cut-off was extremely low.

The candidates said the policy had reduced reservation to mere paperwork. This policy is playing with the future of the youth in the name of absolute merit instead of relative merit, they told Hooda. They demanded that the 35 per cent criterion for the subjective paper be abolished immediately and at least twice the number of candidates as the number of vacancies be called for interviews. They also called for answer sheets and the evaluation process to be made public and transparent, adding that all vacant positions should be filled immediately.

Hooda supported the demands, stating that the government should address the problems of the youth. The BJP should abandon its anti-Haryana stance and work for the best interests of the state, he added.
