According to the month-year comparative data of road accidents, a total of 456 accidents were reported in 2025 as against 439 in 2024 with an increase of 3.9 per cent. However, the number of deaths dropped from 265 in 2024 to 212 in 2025, reflecting a sharp reduction of 20 per cent in road crash fatalities.

The data shows that while the accidents increased in several months of 2025, the fatality rate remained lower than the previous year in most cases. In January 2025, 27 accidents were reported with seven deaths, compared to 36 accidents and 25 deaths in January 2024. Similarly, in February 2025, 32 accidents claimed 12 lives, whereas February 2024 had recorded 27 accidents and 19 deaths.

The trend continued through the year, with fluctuations in accident numbers but comparatively fewer casualties. Notably, November 2024 had recorded the highest fatalities at 36 deaths, while November 2025 saw 20 deaths despite 39 accidents.

Similarly, the data for 2026 (till February) shows 39 accidents and 17 deaths, compared to 63 accidents and 44 deaths during the corresponding period in 2024 and 59 accidents and 19 deaths in the same period of 2025.

“Nearly 20 per cent decrease in the casualty rate reflects the positive impact of continuous enforcement, engineering improvements and public awareness campaigns,” said Deputy Commissioner Sachin Gupta.

However, he expressed concern over new fatal accidents in January 2026, particularly involving pedestrians, two-wheeler riders and nighttime incidents. He emphasised that any loss of life on the roads was unacceptable.

The DC specifically directed improvements in lighting and access control on the national highways, optimisation of traffic signals at major junctions, swift construction of pedestrian facilities in urban and market areas and strict compliance with safety standards in road works being carried out by various agencies, particularly the National Highways Authority of India.

He stated that pedestrian safety and blackspot improvement would remain a permanent agenda in all future district road safety committee meetings. All departments have been instructed to submit action taken reports (ATR) with completion dates and geo-tagged photographs to ensure transparency, monitoring and accountability.

Reiterating the administration’s commitment to safer roads in the district, the DC said that engineering improvements, strict enforcement and continuous public awareness campaigns, coordinated together, could lead to a lasting reduction in road accidents and casualties.

“The NHAI will construct a vehicle underpass in front of Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple at Bahalba and at Madina on the national highway, with an investment of approximately Rs 35 crore. Direction has been issued for the removal of encroachments from Nigana Mod in Kalanaur by February 27 and the construction of footpaths in the area,” Gupta added.
