Jails across state raided, mobiles, opium seized

CHANDIGARH: In raids across jails in Haryana, the police seized mobile phones, SIM cards, chargers, cash, opium and other objectionable articles.

In raids across jails in Haryana, the police seized mobile phones, SIM cards, chargers, cash, opium and other objectionable articles.

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Navdeep Singh Virk said the searches, which were conducted simultaneously, were part of a statewide routine drive.

The searches led to the seizure of seven mobile phones, six SIM cards, 3 chargers, one pen drive, Rs 46,350 cash, 3 gm opium, two small scissors, three injection syringe, two data cables, one mobile battery, sharp-edged material made from utensils and iron nails from different jails.

Virk said teams of about 150-200 policemen in each district started the raids at 9 am, which lasted till 12 noon. He said the teams searched every nook and corner on the jail premises. All those found in possession of unlawful items were being booked under the law.

Three mobile phones were found in Kurukshetra jail, two in Faridabad and one each in Gurugram and Jhajjar. The police teams found Rs 35,510 in Faridabad and Rs 10,840 in Kurukshetra jail. The maximum sharp-edged materials were recovered from Karnal jail and 3 gm opium was seized from Jind.

6 weapons found

Ambala: A search in Central Jail on Saturday found six sharp-edged weapons, mobile chargers and three packets of used smack powder. The district police team, led by Superintendent of Police Abhishek Jorwal and comprising DSPs, CIA heads, SHOs, narcotic cell in-charge and reserve police force swooped on cells and barracks.
