“The new act is an amendment of MGNREGA for providing not just employment but also long-term strengthening of rural economy, higher wages, and enhanced work opportunities for rural labourers,” said Jindal while interacting with mediapersons at the party’s district office, Kapil Kamal Bhawan, in Kaithal.

Jindal said under the new Act, the rural workers would be entitled to 125 days of employment instead of the earlier 100 days, leading to a direct increase in income. He said keeping in mind the labour requirements during the agricultural season, the Act allowed for a temporary suspension of works for up to 60 days during sowing and harvesting so that farming activities were not disrupted.

Replying to questions, the MP said under this Act priority would be on works related to water conservation, rural development and basic infrastructure. He said timely payment of wages had been made mandatory, with payments to be released weekly or within a maximum of 15 days. Highlighting Haryana’s performance, Jindal said the state provides the highest daily wage of Rs 400, reflecting its pro-labour approach.

He further said transparency and quality would be ensured through biometric attendance, GPS-based monitoring, real-time tracking and digital dashboards. The scheme would be implemented jointly by the Centre and states with shared responsibility for funding and execution.
