Judge inspects Karnal jail, interacts with inmates
Justice Harsimran Singh Sethi, judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, appreciated steps being taken by the jail authorities for bringing the inmates into the mainstream by providing education facilities
Justice Harsimran Singh Sethi, judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and administrative Judge of the District Karnal, on Saturday visited Karnal jail and reviewed the facilities being provided to inmates. He interacted with inmates and listened to their grievances.
He appreciated the steps being taken by the jail authorities for bringing the inmates into the mainstream by providing education facilities, including IGNOU, National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), ITI courses, as well as other steps of security, health and hygiene.
During the visit, District and Sessions Judge and Chairman of the District Legal Services Authority, Ajay Kumar Sharda, Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) and Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, Dr Iram Hasan, CJM Khushboo Goyal were also present there. Jail Superintendent Lakhbir Singh Brar welcomed them on the jail premises and informed about the facilities being provided to inmates. He highlighted that nearly 350 inmates were getting education in different courses of IGNOU, ITI and NIOS. He also apprised them that their security arrangements inside and outside the jail were well looked after.
Justice Sethi planted saplings within the jail premises, giving a message of protecting the environment. Meanwhile, the inmates also performed cultural activities. He also checked the food being served to the prisoners. He expressed satisfaction over the quality of food and security arrangements. He also appreciated the efforts and activities of the prison staff for inmates.
CJM Dr Iram Hasan said Justice Sethi conducted inspections from March 19 to 21, covering the District and Sessions Court, as well as Subdivisional Courts in Assandh and Indri, along with the District Jail. She added that the arrangements at all inspected locations were found to be well-organised and necessary guidance was provided during the visits.
