Former Acting Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Justice Mehtab Singh Gill, on Wednesday took over as Punjab State Chief Vigilance Commissioner.

He was administered oath by Punjab Governor this afternoon.

The commission has been set up under the Punjab State Vigilance Commission Bill, 2020, passed by the Vidhan Sabha in October last year.

Justice Gill was also heading a Commission instituted by the Congress government to look into false cases registered during the 10-year rule of the Akali government.

Justice Gill will exercise superintendence and control over the vigilance and the police department.

Applications were invited for the post, following which five retired  high court judges and three IAS  officers applied.

The final selection was by the Governor after Justice Gill was recommended by a committee comprising the Chief Minister, the Speaker and senior most minister in accordance with  the Vigilance Commission Act 2020.
