Karnal, November 28

The voter list of the Karnal Municipal Corporation (KMC) has swelled with the registration of 37,042 new voters, increasing the number to 2,45,836 from 2,08,794 in 2013.

However, there is no geographical change in the KMC limits. Among these new voters, a large number is of first timers. The number of female voters has increased in comparison to male voters. With an increase of 17,455 votes, the number of male voters increased to 1,28,557, while with an increase of 19,582 votes, the number of female voters increased to 1,17,274, says Bal Singh, Secretary, KMC.

These voters will cast their votes at 223 booths in 20 wards, he states.

All political parties are waiting for each other for the announcement of tickets. The BJP is likely to announce its mayoral candidate by December 1, while the Congress is yet to take a decision on contesting the elections on party symbol and the INLD-BSP alliance is likely to announce the candidate by the end of this week.

Former Deputy Mayor Manoj Wadhwa’s wife Asha Wadhwa, former councillor Balwinder Singh’s wife Beant Kaur have so far fielded themselves as independent candidates. With the surfacing of names of Liberty Group MD Shami Bansal’s daughter-in-law Himani Bansal and former Industry Minister Shashipal Mehta’s daughter-in-law Sanchita Mehta in the race of mayor’s ticket from the BJP, the party has kept the candidate’s name on hold as it is fearing poaching and revolt within the party rank, say the sources.

Sources claim the ticket may go to former Mayor Renu Bala Gupta, but the names of former district president Ashok Sukhija’s daughter-in-law Dipti Sukhija, former Senior Deputy Mayor Krishan Garg’s daughter-in-law Monika Garg, BJP district president Jagmohan Anand’s wife Rekha Anand and former councillors Sujata Arora and Sonia Pandit cannot be ignored.
