A sewage treatment plant with the capacity of 50MLD is being constructed in Sector 37 of Karnal to overcome the problem of filthy water of the city.

Presently, the city has a plant with the capacity of 40 MLD, which was constructed during 1995-2000 on old technology and is not giving desired results.

Keeping in view the future expansion of the city and scarcity of water, the Union Ministry for Urban Development launched Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) programme in 2015, under which a survey was conducted and it was proposed to construct a new STP of 50MLD capacity in the city, said Nishant Kumar Yadav, Commissioner, Karnal Municipal Corporation (KMC).

He maintained that the existing plant was on 25 acres while the new one was being developed on eight acres. The land of the existing plant would be used for other development projects of the city.

“The new STP will be fully automatic as it is being constructed under latest technology based on programme able logistic control (PLC) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA),” he said, adding that with the new technology the plant would meet all the parameters set by the NGT for bio-chemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS) and nitrogen and phosphorous.

He said that the plant was being constructed at a cost of Rs72.45 crore including operation and maintenance cost for five years and it would start functioning by the end of March 2020.

He claimed that it would resolve the problem of the filthy water in the city. About the process of treatment, he said that sewage collected from town would be processed. The effluent treated water through decanter would lead to chlorination tank. Chlorine would be mixed thoroughly in cement for disinfection purpose. The dose of chlorine would be calculated by calibration. After chlorination, this treated water would be used for agricultural purposes. The sludge generated could be used as manure, he said.

  • The new sewage treatment plant (STP) will be fully automatic as it is being constructed under latest technology based on programme able logistic control (PLC) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA). 
  • It will meet all the parameters set by the NGT for bio-chemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS) and nitrogen and phosphorous.
