Kurukshetra varsity hosts All India Inter-University Men’s Boxing Championship

1,600 players, 300 coaches and managers, 45 technical officials, and 40 volunteers participated

The All-India Inter-University Men’s Boxing Championship started on the Kurukshetra University Campus on Monday.The championship started on March 2 will conclude on March 7.

Inaugurating the championship, Vice-Chancellor Prof Som Nath Sachdeva emphasised that Kurukshetra University stood among the nation’s most historic and distinguished educational institutions, with an equally rich sporting tradition. Highlighting recent achievements, he noted that the university secured third position in the MAKA Trophy rankings over the past two years and achieved 13th position in the Khelo India competition last year, underscoring its consistent performance at the national level.

Sachdeva shared that the university had produced 16 Arjuna Awardees, five Dronacharya Awardees, and nine Padma Shri honourees — a testament to its robust sports culture and high-quality training ecosystem. He also underlined the institution’s modern and comprehensive sports infrastructure, which included an international-standard swimming pool, an all-weather swimming facility, a state-of-the-art shooting range, a synthetic hockey ground, and extensive indoor and outdoor sports amenities.

Reinforcing the university’s commitment to excellence, he said the Haryana Government had sanctioned Rs 1 crore for the establishment of a Centre of Excellence at Kurukshetra University, aimed at providing advanced training facilities and support to athletes.

Sachdeva encouraged the participants to focus on delivering their best performance without worrying about results. He urged the athletes to uphold discipline, dedication, and sportsmanship, adding that perseverance and team spirit were key to achieving excellence. He assured that the organising committee had made comprehensive arrangements for accommodation and meals to ensure a smooth and successful championship.

International boxer Manoj Kumar, who has represented India at the global level, also addressed the gathering. He motivated the players to compete with passion, discipline and a positive mindset.

Director of Sports Prof Dinesh Kumar Rana said the championship was witnessing participation from 1,600 players, 300 coaches and managers, 45 technical officials, and 40 volunteers. The event brought together top boxing talent from universities across the country, strengthening the university’s reputation as a leading hub for sports excellence.
