Labour union holds protest in Sirsa for workers’ rights
After the protest, representatives submitted a national-level memorandum to the Prime Minister and a state-level petition to the Chief Minister through local officials
In response to a nationwide call by the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), a protest was organised on Thursday at the district headquarters to demand better protection of workers’ rights. The protest was led by BMS state executive member Jiwan Singh Thakur with district secretary Charanjit Verma managing the event.
Over 400 workers from various sectors, including a significant number of women, participated in the demonstration. The protest called for the full implementation of resolutions passed at the All-India Conference in Puri, Odisha, and opposed the budget’s neglect of workers’ issues.
Key demands included necessary reforms in the ESI ceiling, extending benefits of the Service Act 2024 to employees working under the Skill Employment Corporation for over five years, and ensuring job security for the staff at universities and cooperative departments. The workers also demanded that the Labour Department reopen its portal, which has been closed for eight months, hindering verification for registered workers.
After the protest, representatives submitted a national-level memorandum to the Prime Minister and a state-level petition to the Chief Minister through local officials. Speakers said that ignoring workers’ legitimate demands would no longer be tolerated and vowed to escalate the movement if needed.
