The district court on Monday sentenced 12 persons to life imprisonment for a double murder that took place in Barchhapar village of the district 11 years ago. Two of the convicts are visually impaired.

Additional District and Session Judge Gurvinder Singh Wadhwa had held the accused guilty on February 11. The court pronounced the quantum of punishment today.

The convicts were identified as Kalam Singh (71, visually impaired since 2008), Devi Ram (75), Paras Ram (79), Krishan (43), Gagan Datt (50), Surender (42) and four brothers — Bholu (36, visually impaired since birth), Mohan (40), Bijender (45) and Mala Ram (47) — all residents of Barchhapar village, Jeevan (70) of Nidana village in Rohtak and Sonu (29) of Gangoli village in Jind.

The convicts were involved in a double murder during a dispute over encroachment on panchayat land in the village. The incident occurred on February 28, 2010, after which Ram Kesh lodged a complaint that two persons were killed during the dispute.

The police said there were 15 accused, one of whom was a minor and two who died during trial. The court imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 each on the convicts. — TNS
