In a horrific incident, a woman was allegedly murdered before being burnt by her husband at Bhawana village of the Hodal subdivision in the district recently.
The accused is at large. A case has been registered.
Police sources said the incident took place on the night of July 29, when the accused, identified as Shashikant (36), a local resident, took his wife Guddi (30) to an abandoned house in the village on some pretext at around 10 pm, where he beat her up and strangled her to death. He then poured petrol on the body and set her on fire, reducing the body to ashes.
The sources said the accused was in a drunken condition at that time. The remains of the deceased, which were collected and packed into a gunny bag, were thrown into a canal on the same night by the accused, who fled from the place after the incident.
The matter came to light after Raj Singh, father of the accused, came to know about it and lodged a complaint against his son the next day with the police. The accused, according to his kin, was addicted to liquor and used to beat his wife frequently on minor issues. He told the police that Shashikant was married to Guddi, hailing from Bihar, nine years ago and has an eight-year-old son.
