Marathon marks International Women’s Day in Kurukshetra

A marathon was organised to mark International Women’s Day in Kurukshetra on Sunday.

Gita scholar Swami Gyananand flagged off the marathon, while Haryana State Commission for Women (HSCW) chairperson Renu Bhatia, along with several other women BJP leaders and supporters, participated in the event. Women participants were also seen riding two-wheelers, tractors and cycles during the marathon.

While addressing the gathering at Dronacharya Stadium, Swami Gyananand said, “Women are given the highest place in Indian culture. In this country, women are respected and worshipped. With this goal in mind, the government is continuously implementing schemes to empower women.”

Renu Bhatia said PM Modi launched the nationwide campaign ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ from Panipat, and the government led by CM Nayab Singh Saini had opened government colleges to educate daughters. She added that several schemes such as Lakhpati Didi, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana and Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana had been implemented for girls and women. HSCW member secretary Monica Malik, District Municipal Commissioner Aman Kumar, BJP district chief Tejinder Singh, and several other leaders were present on the occasion.

Meanwhile, vice-president of the Haryana State Council for Child Welfare Suman Saini said, “We are proud of daughters and women of Haryana who have brought glory not only to the state but to the entire country through their hard work, courage and talent. Haryana, once known only as the land of farmers and soldiers, is now recognised worldwide for its achievements. Haryana’s daughters are showcasing their talent in sports, science, education, the military, administration and even space.”

She was speaking as the chief guest at a district-level programme on International Women’s Day organised by the Women and Child Welfare Department in Ladwa to honour outstanding female employees, young women and athletes who had achieved success in various fields.

In Shahabad, a women’s sports competition was organised at Markanda National College on the occasion. The event was jointly organised by the Sports Authority of India and MY Bharat under the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports’ flagship initiative Achieving Sports Milestones by Inspiring Women through Action. A large number of girls and women from various schools and institutions in the district participated in the event.

International hockey player Gurjit Kaur said sports were an important medium for women’s self-confidence, health and empowerment. Deputy Director, MY Bharat Kurukshetra, Surmayee Sharma said the objective of the event was to inspire women and girls towards sports, fitness and a healthy lifestyle.
