The Swachh Bharat Mission team of the Municipal Corporation of Yamunanagar-Jagadhri (MCYJ) has launched an awareness campaign against single-use polythene bags.

The team inspected dustbins at Red Cross Market in Sector 17, Jagadhri, on the directions of Municipal Commissioner Mahabir Parsad. They urged shopkeepers to shun single-use bags and plastic items and advised them to use cloth and jute bags instead.

Maintaining that single-use polythene bags were a major reason behind clogged drains and waterlogging, they also urged shopkeepers to keep separate dustbins for wet and dry waste. The shopkeepers were urged to dispose of waste in dustbins and hand it over to the MC’s garbage collection vehicles rather than dumping it in the open.

They were also apprised of diseases caused by the practice of dumping waste in the open. Municipal Commissioner Mahabir Parsad appealed to citizens to keep the twin cities clean and free from banned plastic items.

“I appeal to people to use cloth and jute bags for everyday shopping and cooperate with the MC by segregating dry and wet waste,” said Parsad.
