National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma has sought more teeth for the commission. “The commission should be given power at least to penalise or punish officers who do not respond to summon and avoid coming to the commission office,” she told The Tribune.

Sharma said, “We do not have power to ensure our recommendations are implemented. We do not have power to impose any fine or penalise the officers who do not come to the commission after being summoned.”

She was here today to chair a training programme for police personnel on community policing at the Haryana Police Academy, Madhuban.

Sharma said that non-cooperative attitude of the police was a major challenge and there was a need to sensitise the police personnel to cases related to the crime against women.

“I receive several complaints regarding police apathy. If the police investigate the cases related to atrocities against women seriously, the victim will get justice,” she said.

Vivek Atray, former IAS officer and motivational speaker, motivated the police personnel not to behave with people in a manner which they do not like. He says negative energy affects the surrounding adversely, while the positive energy brings cheers on faces of others.
