Nearly 48% posts of teachers vacant in Nuh govt schools; dropout rate highest in Haryana
Nearly half the teaching posts in government schools in Nuh district remain vacant, a situation that coincides with the highest student dropout rate at the elementary level in Haryana for the academic year 2025-26.
The data was shared by Education Minister Mahipal Dhanda in the Haryana Assembly on Thursday in response to a question by Nuh MLA Aftab Ahmed.
According to the minister, government primary schools in Nuh face a teacher shortage of 56.6%, with 2,390 posts vacant out of 4,223. In middle schools, the shortage stands at 42.1%, with 951 vacancies out of 2,260 posts. Overall, the district has a 47.8% shortage of teachers.
The district also recorded the highest dropout rate at the elementary level (Classes VI-VIII) at 12.84%. The rate has been rising steadily over the past three years. It was 8.61% in 2023-24, which increased to 12.52% in 2024-25 before reaching the current level.
In comparison, the state average dropout rate at the elementary level for 2025-26 stands at 3.05%. The minister also informed the House that Panchkula district recorded the second-highest dropout rate at the elementary level this year at 6.03%. Dhanda admitted that the dropout rate in Nuh at both elementary and senior secondary levels is higher than the state average.
Listing the steps being taken by the government, the minister said children were being tracked through the Parivar Pehchan Patra (PPP) system to identify those who had dropped out of school.
"Parents of all dropout students are contacted and encouraged to re-enroll their children in school. Enrolment drives by the name of 'Parvesh Utsav' are conducted wherein teachers go door-to-door to motivate parents to send their children to schools," he said.
The minister added that students of Classes IX to XII living more than 5 km away from schools in Nuh are provided Rs 6,000 annually as travel assistance. Currently, 738 students are benefiting from this scheme.
He also pointed out that the absence of nearby schools often forces many girls to discontinue education after Class V. To address the issue, the government has established five Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) and three girls' hostels in the educationally backward blocks of the district. At present, 1,167 girls are studying in KGBVs, he said.
Earlier, the government had informed the Assembly that 29 schools in Nuh have no regular teacher, while 87 schools are functioning with only one teacher.
Raising the issue, Aftab Ahmed urged the government to fill vacancies under the Mewat cadre and complete pending recruitments. He also pointed out that five blocks in Nuh still do not have Block Education Officers, which is affecting the functioning of the education system.
