The civic authorities are yet to come up with a comprehensive plan for conducting a detailed survey of dilapidated buildings in the city that pose a risk to the lives of residents.

Survey yet to be conducted

Guarav Antil, Additional Commissioner, MCF, said while the work had been delegated to the officials concerned an official survey was yet to be conducted in this regard.

Several of these buildings, including residential and those housing government offices, have been in a poor condition and the authorities have no details regarding the number of buildings that are dangerous and those that need to be demolished, said sources in the civic administration.

While the number of dangerous or condemned buildings in the city and the district were in several hundreds, no official report had been prepared or made public so far, despite a provision being in place in the Municipal Corporation or the Urban Local bodies Act, said the sources.

The sources added that the powers or the authority to detect such buildings and demolish these had been delegated to the officials of the level of the Executive Engineers in the Municipal Corporation Faridabad (MCF). As many as 30 government buildings had been declared unsafe by the PWD in the past five years, the sources said.

“While many buildings have collapsed in the past decade, the authorities are yet to begin a survey or audit of the buildings that have become too old and are being constructed without the maps being approved,” says Vishnu Goel, a social activist, here. He said the administration had failed to learn its lesson after the recent incident at Seekri village in the district where three minor siblings died after the balcony of their house collapsed. He said the house was in a dilapidated condition for the past many years.

Yogesh Dhingra, a former municipal councillor, said the rainy season had necessitated the need for a survey or identification of dangerous buildings, but there seemed to be no plan in place to assess the situation and assure safety of the residents. Besides, MCF auditorium, zonal office of the MCF at Ballabgarh, Fire Department building at NIT, a portion of the Civil Hospital, overhead water tanks located in various parts of the city, were in a dilapidated condition and needed to be demolished, said the reports.

OP Kardam, Executive Engineer, MCF, said while action was initiated after the receipt of a complaint, when one of such buildings was demolished under the supervision of the department last year.

Guarav Antil, Additional Commissioner, MCF, said while the work had been delegated to the officials concerned an official survey was yet to be conducted in this regard.
