Olympian boxer Jai Bhagwan booked for slapping woman official

Olympian boxer Jai Bhagwan, who is an inspector in the Haryana Police, was on Wednesday booked for allegedly manhandled and slapped a woman inspector of the state Excise and Taxation Department during an inspection of a liquor vend in Laxmi Nagar locality on May 19.

Jai Bhagwan is an Arjuna Awardee pugilist who got the job in the sports quota. He is posted at the CIA branch of Fatehabad district.

The incident occurred when he called the Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner (DETC), Hisar, and said that he was checking a liquor vend at Laxmi Vihar locality. He asked him to send the official concerned to the spot.

When Excise and Taxation Inspector Neelam Sharma went to the spot with her husband at about 9 pm, Jai Bhagwan asked her to show the relevant documents of the liquor vend. When the woman official informed him that the vend has been set up as per the state Excise Policy and thus was not illegal, Jai Bhagwan and other persons allegedly manhandled her and provoked the locals to raise anti-government slogans.

She alleged in the complaint that they were held hostage for one hour at the spot by the protesters.

The DETC submitted the complaint to the DC and SP about the incident demanding action against Jai Bhagwan and others for manhandling and obstructing her from performing her duty and also reported the matter to the higher authorities of the department. Jai Bhagwan had said that it was just an allegation. 

Meanwhile, Jai Bhagwan has denied the charges.
