In a striking mismatch between vacancies and qualifying candidates, only 17 aspirants have cleared the Subject Knowledge Test (SKT) for 163 posts of Assistant Professor in Mathematics (college cadre).
The results were declared by the Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC) on Wednesday, indicating that just 17 candidates managed to secure the minimum qualifying marks of 35% in the subjective paper.
Officials attributed the low success rate to the difficulty level of the question paper and strict evaluation. “The SKTs are subjective papers. It appears that candidates are not good at writing the exams,” said an HPSC official.
Another senior official pointed out that this was not an isolated case, noting that tough papers and stringent marking have repeatedly resulted in fewer candidates qualifying than the number of posts advertised.
A similar trend has been observed in several recent recruitments conducted by the commission. For instance, only 39 candidates qualified the SKT for Post Graduate Teachers (PGT) in Computer Science against 1,711 posts advertised earlier this year, forcing the authorities to re-advertise 1,672 vacant posts.
In Economics (PGT), 112 candidates were selected against 129 posts, while in Assistant Professor (English), only 145 candidates qualified for 613 posts.
In Defence Studies, just five candidates were selected against 23 posts, with no candidates recommended in several reserved categories. Likewise, in Physical Education, only 89 candidates were selected out of 126 posts.
Other subjects also witnessed shortfalls. In Punjabi, 21 candidates were selected against 24 posts; in Physics, 80 against 96; in Computer Science, 41 against 47; and in Economics, only 21 candidates were selected against 43 posts, with no candidates recommended in the SC category.
In Botany and Chemistry, too, selections fell short of advertised posts, while Zoology saw 84 candidates selected against 91 vacancies.
