The Rewari police have arrested two youths for allegedly shooting a cab driver and looting his cab and cash, just hours after the crime. DSP (Bawal) Surender Sheoran said that one of the arrested youths, Devanshu from Ajmer in Rajasthan, is pursuing a PhD, while the other, Shubham Verma from Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, is a postgraduate and preparing for UGC-NET for lecturership.
The complainant, Sanjay Kumar from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, operates an Ola cab in Delhi-NCR. He stated that one of the youths booked his cab to go from Delhi to Jaipur late on December 15. The cab driver alleged that the youths tried to loot the car, and one of them shot him in the leg when he resisted. “They pushed me out and fled with the cab, also looting around Rs 18,000 in cash from the car,” he said.
The injured cab driver was taken to Civil Hospital in Rewari, and he later lodged a complaint with the police. The CIA staff and other police officials intercepted the stolen cab near Banipur Chowk on the Delhi-Jaipur highway and arrested the youths under Operation Hotspot Domination.
The arrested youths are Devanshu, a resident of Ajmer, Rajasthan, and Shubham Verma, a resident of Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. The police recovered the stolen car and seized two pistols, 89 rounds, three magazines, four mobile phones and SIM cards, a wave-blocker (jammer), a GPS detector, and a pepper spray from the accused.
DSP Sheoran said the preliminary investigation revealed that the cab was booked over the phone around 1 am on December 16. The cab driver picked up the youths from Old Delhi Railway Station and headed for Jaipur. When the taxi arrived near Banipur Chowk, the youths stopped the cab, claiming they wanted to answer nature’s call.
“As the driver stopped, one youth pointed a pistol at his head and asked him to get out. When he resisted, he was shot in the right leg. The other youth pushed him aside and began driving. He was later pushed out, and they threw his mobile phones out of the cab before fleeing,” Sheoran said.
A case has been registered at the Kasola police station, and the arrested youths are being interrogated to uncover more details.
