Rain leaves Yamunanagar, Jagadhri waterlogged, exposes drainage woes

The twin cities of Yamunanagar and Jagadhri have been witnessing continuous rainfall since Monday, with several low-lying areas waterlogged and residents facing considerable inconvenience.

Several roads and internal lanes were inundated, making commuting difficult for motorists, pedestrians, schoolchildren and office-goers. Water also accumulated outside houses in a number of residential colonies, causing inconvenience to elderly residents, women and children.

Several roads were flooded, disrupting traffic movement and forcing commuters to take alternative routes. Two-wheeler riders were seen negotiating waterlogged stretches cautiously, while complaints were also received of vehicles breaking down after passing through accumulated rainwater. Traffic moved at a slow pace at several places, resulting in congestion during peak hours.

The Yamunanagar and Jagadhri offices of the Municipal Corporation were also flooded.

Local residents alleged that uncleaned drains and inadequate drainage management resulted in waterlogging not only in the city’s low-lying areas but also in higher, more upscale localities.

Old Hamida’s Khaddha Colony, Jammu Colony, Camp, Laxmi Nagar, Veena Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Model Town, Model Colony, Jamuna Gali, Chuna Bhatti, all streets of Azad Nagar, Matka Chowk, Pattharwala Bazaar, Devi Bhawan Bazaar, Kheda Bazaar, Buria Chungi Road, Patri Mohalla and several other colonies witnessed waterlogging.

Meanwhile, amid incessant rain, Mayor Suman Bahamani held a meeting with Municipal Commissioner Mahabir Parsad and other officials concerned regarding the waterlogging situation in the Municipal Corporation area.

The Mayor inquired about the status of the teams deployed in the field and said employees should continuously remain at waterlogged sites, monitor the situation and keep taking feedback until the water was drained out.

The Mayor said updates were being collected from every part of the municipal area. Complaints and information received from the public regarding waterlogging on her mobile number and the municipal helpline number were also being taken seriously, and the relevant officials and field teams were immediately sent to the spot.

Municipal Commissioner Mahabir Parsad said the entire machinery of the Municipal Corporation was active to ensure that citizens faced minimum inconvenience during rains. He said priority was being given to immediate response, effective drainage and on-site monitoring of waterlogged areas.
