Executive Council meet row: Rohtak varsity Registrar suspended, reinstated within 12 hours
Registrar Dr Krishan Kant reinstated as Haryana Governor-cum-Chancellor intervenes and postpones executive council meet
In a dramatic turnaround, the Haryana Governor-cum-Chancellor of Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) has ordered the reinstatement of Registrar Dr Krishan Kant within 12 hours of his suspension, which had been issued by Vice-Chancellor Prof Rajbir Singh.
The Chancellor also directed the postponement of Wednesday’s scheduled Executive Council meeting.
According to an official communication from the Governor’s office on Wednesday, the Governor-cum-Chancellor set aside the suspension order dated February 17 with immediate effect and instructed that Dr Krishan Kant be reinstated as Registrar until further orders.
The letter, addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, further stated that no action should be taken by him without prior approval from the Chancellor.
The development has caused a major embarrassment for the university administration, as the suspension of Dr Krishan Kant had been issued late on Tuesday night, citing alleged non-compliance with the Vice-Chancellor’s directions.
The original order had also claimed that the situation had brought the functioning of the university to a standstill and that disciplinary proceedings would be initiated.
Sources within the university said the Executive Council meeting, which was expected to deliberate on key administrative and disciplinary matters, has now been postponed following the Chancellor’s directive.
Earlier, authorities had placed Registrar Dr Krishan Kant and senior professor Dr Naseeb Singh Gill of the Department of Computer Science and Applications under suspension ahead of the meeting of the university’s 304th Executive Council.
“The Registrar has created an unprecedented situation in the university by not complying with orders of the Vice Chancellor, which is a gross violation of the Section 9-C(2) of the University Act that stipulates the Registrar to work directly under the superintendence, direction and control of the VC.
“He has created such a situation in the university that its functioning has come to a standstill. Under these circumstances, Dr Krishan Kant, Registrar, is hereby suspended with immediate effect, pending disciplinary proceedings against him,” stated the order issued by the Vice-Chancellor.
